SECRETed is an EU-funded H2020 research project that harnesses the power of aquatic biotechnology to produce biochemicals with customised properties for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, agricultural, and chemical industries.
As SECRETed entered its final six months, a Free SECRETed Webinar was organised to openly share the project’s latest research findings with all stakeholders. The event successfully took place on January 20, 2025, bringing together experts and researchers for an engaging and insightful discussion.
The webinar featured 12 presentations including 11 talks from SECRETed partners and a distinguished invited talk by Dr. Olga Genilloud from Fundación MEDINA, Spain.
With 91 attendees representing 78 organisations, the event effectively disseminated recent technological advancements and research achievements to a diverse audience. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers through two dedicated Q&A sessions, fostering meaningful discussions and knowledge exchange.
SECRETed focuses on developing hybrid molecules with customised properties by combining biosynthetic genes from marine and extremophilic microorganisms. Utilising machine learning algorithms, microbial screening, and metabolic engineering domains, SECRETed will uncover genetic mechanisms responsible for the biosynthesis and expansion of chemical diversity. In the context of SECRETed, a unique database has been developed comprising molecular structures, physicochemical characteristics, bioactivities, and genetic mechanisms. Reverse engineering biosynthetic gene clusters will standardise and modularise genetic elements to enhance industrial exploitation. Industry-driven formulations have been identified and developed based on engineered combinations of genetic elements expressed in microbial hosts, with new strains designed, built, and tested iteratively for sustainable industrial processes.
This project has received funding for the European Union H2020’s research and innovation program under grant agreement number 101000794.
